Militants attack SSB patrol party in Srinagar, jawan killed

Srinagar, Oct 14 (IBNS): One Army jawan has been killed while eight others were injured as suspected militants on Friday evening attacked a deployment of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Zakura area, on the outskirts of Srinagar, reports said.

The militants attacked the SSB patrol party near an industrial estate complex in the area of Zakura, when they were heading back to their camp.

"When our convoy of 6 vehicles was heading towards the camp in Zakura area on Friday evening, militants started indiscriminate firing on the convoy taking advantage of the darkness," IG SSB Deepak Kumar told IBNS over phone from New Delhi.

He further said that nine jawans were injured while one of them succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The area has been cordoned off and a search operation is underway to nab the militants.

The attack comes days after militants tried to carry out an fidayeen attack on forces' convoy in Pampore area, close to Srinagar.
