India will stand shoulder to shoulder with Myanmar : PM Modi

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IBNS) : Pledging to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with Myanmar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India has a 'robust' development cooperation programme in several areas with its eastern neighbour.

"We have agreed to enhance our engagement in several areas incluiding agriculture, power, renewable energy and power sector," Modi said at a joint press statement with visiting Myanmar State Counsellor and  Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi.

"As a reliable partner and friend, India stands shoulder to shoulder with you. I wish you and the people of Myanmar all success," Modi said on the third and concluding day of Suu Kyi's India visit.

Modi said he and Suu Kyi had "extensive and productive discussions" on the full range of partnership between the two countries.

He also  said that as  close and friendly neighbours, the security interests of India and Myanmar are closely aligned and both the countries have agreed on close security cooperation in border areas.

The PM  announced that  the Archaelogical Society of India will soon begin work on restoring two old temples and inscriptions of King Mindon and King Baygyidaw in Bodh Gaya.

"Our societies enjoy a centuries old cultural connect. We have offered assistance in restoring pagodas damaged in recent earthquake," he said.

Praising Suu Kyi for her leadership, Modi said : "Your clear vision, mature leadership, struggle & eventual success in establising democracy in Myanmar has inspired people across the world."

"As you lead Myanmar and  to become a modern and prosperous nation, India and its friendship will stand with you in full support  solidarity," he said.
