New Delhi, Nov 2 (IBNS): In one of the rare instances, the national capital on Wednesday witnessed high political drama with the detention of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after they attempted to meet the family of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal who allegedly committed suicide over the one rank one pension (OROP) issue.

The suicide of the ex-service man turned into a political row with Rahul Gandhi being detained twice after he met Grewal's family.

Gandhi and other Congress leaders were taken to Tilak Marg Police Station after they were detained in the evening.

"Rahul Gandhi other senior leaders being taken to Tilak Marg Police Station.@OfficeOfRG," the Congress tweeted.

The party said: "Rahul Gandhi & senior Congress leaders detained again after meeting the family of Martyr Ram Kishan Grewal #ModiIsScared."

He was freed at 8.15 pm and said the government must apologise to the Subedar's relatives for detaining them.

Rahul Gandhi, who was detained earlier in the day too, had questioned the Delhi's police about the arrest of the deceased veteran's son, media reported.

He said, "Aren't you ashamed of arresting the veteran's son?"

Commenting on his own arrest after being freed, he asked that: "Did I make a mistake by offering condolences to the family?"

Delhi Police senior official said that the department will not tolerate  demonstrations in front and within the hospital.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, commenting on the issue, reportedly said, "Police will do what it takes to reduce risks."

In the evening, Arvind Kejriwal also said that he has been detained by the police.

The Delhi Chief Minister tweeted: "Formally detained by the police. No idea where they are taking me."

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came out in support of Gandhi and said it was 'unfortunate' that he was stopped from visiting 'bereaved family' of the jawan.

"Very sad that one of our former jawans committed suicide. Unfortunate that @OfficeOfRG & @msisodia stopped from visiting bereaved family 1/2," Banerjee tweeted.

She said: "They should be allowed. Our representative is on his way to Delhi 2/2."

In her support to Kejriwal, Banerjee tweeted: "What is happening ? Unprecedented . A CM is detained in his own State. He cannot move about freely. Unacceptable."

Ram Kishan Grewal allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday over the demand to implement the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme.
