Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 (IBNS): Kerala's health minister KK Shailaja defended one of the senior members of the state's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) after he gave out the name of the alleged gang-rape victim, the media reported on Monday.

The victim and her husband, without revealing their identity, went public with the story of the gang-rape a few days ago after the incident came to light through a Facebook post.

K. Radhakrishnan, on Saturday, while announcing that the CPI-M party has suspended Jayanthan, a municipal councillor, for his alleged involvement in the gang-rape, also mentioned the victim's name.

Confronted by members of the media that he cannot name a rape victim, Radhakrishnan reportedly said it is not right that only Jayanthan's name can be made public, and not that of the victim.

On Monday, the state's health minister said she found that mentioning the name of the victim was 'no big deal', according to media reports.

Revealing the name of a victim can entail two years of imprisonment under Section 228 (A) of the IPC.
