Levy on major air routes to fund regional connectivity

New Delhi, Nov 11 (IBNS): Air fares are likely to go up as the central government plans to levy taxes to boost regional connectivity, according to media reports.

The Union government plans to levy tax on major routes to improve air connectivity among the smaller cities.

Tweeting about the Stakeholders' Conference and Pre-bid Meeting  for Regional Connectivity Scheme - Udan, held on Friday, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha,tweeted, "A day of great significance for Indian Civil Aviation with 19 states now having signed or given consent to #UDAN scheme."

MoUs have been signed with Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, West Bengal, etc.

Sarbanand Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam, tweeted, "Signing of MoU by Ministry of Civil Aviation, GOI, Department of Transport, GOA, & AAI for Regional Connectivity Scheme - #UDAN at Guwahati."

In further tweets, Jayant Sinha said:

" Transforming the East with regional air connectivity in #WestBengal with #UDAN MOU exchanged. @MamataOfficial."

"Glad to have formalized #UDAN MOU with #Uttrakhand. A major fillip to tourism & employment development for the state.  @harishrawatcmuk."

"Signed the #UDAN MOU with #MadhyaPradesh. A huge impetus for economic development of the state. @ChouhanShivraj."
