Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 16 (IBNS): Pilgrims are turning up in large numbers at the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala with the start of the pilgrimage season, but the ban on the entry of women of a certain age remains, media reported on Wednesday.

The Sabarimala Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is situated on a hilltop in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district,

The state administration and Indian Railways have made special arrangements to ensure trouble-free visits for the pilgrims as well as prevent disasters and criminal activities, media reported.

According to temple law, girls and women between 10 and 50 years of age are not allowed to enter the sanctum.

Although progressive groups have been asking the temple authorities to allow women of all ages to enter the sanctum, there has been no response from them.

The Kerala High Court in 1991 banned the entry of women between the age of 10 and 50 years at all times during the year.

According to media reports, the Supreme Court of India has accepted petitions challenging the ban.

The Kerala government has said it supports the entry of women into the sanctum,
