Modi meets party MPs, makes emotional speech to counter Opposition misinformation on note ban

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IBNS) : Amid a joint opposition by rival forces, Prime Minisiter Narendra Modi met his own BJP party MPs on Tuesday morning, making an emotional speech to counter the "misinformation" being spread against demonetisation and asking them to tell the people about the many benefits of the reform, reports said.

"This is the beginning, not the end," the PM said about his plan to fight tax evasion and arrest the flow of black money- a promise his Government had made long before.

The BJP parliamentarians then passed a resolution backing the government's decision to outlaw the old high denomination.

Modi had announced scrapping of all 1,000 and 500 rupee notes from the midnight.

The move made people across the country to go for exchanging the old high value notes, which constitute 86 per cent of the total currencies in circulation in the market.

The Government has, however, put a cap on the exchange of notes, stipulating a swapping limit of Rs. 2,500 per person.

There has also been a cap on withdrawal of cash from one's account with an individual being allowed to withdraw Rs. 24,000 per week.

The country witnessed long queues in front of all banks and ATMs across the country and the dearth of cash led to sagging transactions.

About 70 people, most of them elderly, reportedly died across the country while standing in queues in front of banks or ATMs.

The situation prompted the opposition to go for an onslaught against the Government for causing hardship to the people.

The opposition also questioned the Government's intention and alleged that the decision was made known to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

While the PM was addressing his party, 11 opposition parties led by the Congress met to discuss their strategy against the government on the notes ban.

The currency ban has stalled parliament proceedings since the winter session began last week with the opposition making repeated demands for a statement from the PM and a threadbare discussion on the move.

The Government has said that PM Modi will not speak in the Rajya Sabha, but that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is ready to answer the opposition's questions.

On Wednesday, opposition parties will hold a large protest within the parliament complex.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said she will lead a protest in the capital today. Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia too plans to lead his Aam Aadmi Party in a march to parliament.
