Demonetisation problems to be over in 10-15 days, Govt tells SC
"The Government is not sitting around doing nothing...In 10-16 days it will be all over," The Centre said.
The statement was made as the court was hearing a batch of petitions that allege that the demonetisation drive has caught people in a huge cash crunch.
As the Court put several questions, the Government also said it would not be possible to have a stock of printed notes ready before the notes ban announcement as it would have defeated the purpose of secrecy.
Replying a court question as to why people couldn't be assured a minimum amount for withdrawal, the Government said the restriction was put to ensure that everyone gets new currency.
A three-judge bench of the apex court said it will take time to adjudicate.
The court said it can even refer it to a five-judge bench if it deemed fit.
Asked about the benefits and objectives of demonetisation, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said it had been implemented to fight black money and illegal money used for terror activities.
