BJP welcomes move by Lalu’s minister son to ban cow slaughter in Bihar
Yadav happens to be the elder son of RJD president Lalu Prasad. The RJD is a coalition partner in the ruling Nitish Kumar Government in Bihar.
“The BJP will support any move by the RJD to seek a ban on cow slaughter,” senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi told the media today.
He said although the cow slaughter remains officially banned in Bihar, it goes unabated owing to flaws in the existing laws.
“The Bihar Preservation and Improvement of Animals Act, 1955 provides for only six month jail term or a fine of Rs 1000 on violation of the act resulting in its failure,” Modi told the media.
The reactions came shortly after Yadav sought for a blanket ban on cow slaughter quite like the ban on currency notes during his tour on Vrindavan.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi should also ban cow slaughter the way he banned the high-value notes in the country,” Yadav was quoted as saying in a Hindi daily on Sunday.
He reportedly said the cow slaughter had not been stopped despite a ban on it adding the Bihar government would very soon effectively implement the ban on cow slaughter. He also described himself as the “descendent of Lord Krishna”.
Yadav is an ardent follower of Krishna and is often seen applying long sandal mark on his forehead.
Yadav, who is the health minister in the Nitish Kumar Government in Bihar is currently on tour of Vrindavan—a town in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh which is ruled by Akhilesh Yadav, his relative.
Krishna is believed to have spent his childhood days in Vrindavan, according to Hindu mythology.
