Assam police Crime branch arrested rape accused absconding Meghalaya's legislator

Guwahati, Jan 7 (IBNS): The Crime branch of Assam Police on late Friday night arrested the Meghalaya's legislator from the Gorchuk area of Guwahati city, who was absconding after his name emerged as an accused in the rape case of a 14-year old girl.

Following a tip off, the Assam Police crime branch arrested Julius Dorphang, the independent MLA of Mawhati constituency from the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) near Gorchuk area.

A top police official said that the rape accused Meghalaya's legislator was caught when he tried to fled to outside of Assam and Meghalaya.

The Assam police had been conducting search operation to nab the absconding MLA in Guwahati since Thursday evening following intelligence inputs that he being sheltered by a former insurgent leader.

Later, Assam police handed over him to Meghalaya police.

Dorphang, the former rebel leader of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council ( HNLC) and now supporting the Mukul Sangma led government, was hiding after Meghalaya police registered a case against him at Laitumkhrah Police Station in Shillong and booked under section 366 (A) of the IPC and under section 3 (a)/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under section 5 of Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.

The sexual exploitation incident came to light last month after a waiter at a guest house owned by Meghalaya Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh’s son was arrested for trafficking the victim.

On January 4, a local court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Dorphang.
