Severe cold wave continues in north India, Delhi experiences coldest day at 3.4 degree

New Delhi, Jan 12 (IBNS) : Entire north India remained in the grip of a severe cold wave on Thursday as Delhi recorded its coldest day with the the minimum temperature plummeting to 3.4 degree Celsius while the mercury plunged below in many hilly areas of Uttarakhand.

According to reports the effect of the icy northern wind had its effect elsewhere across the country.

Indian Meteorological Department said the minimum temperature in Delhi on Thursday is likely to remain consistent.

The maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 17.2 degree Celsius, three notches below the season's average for the National Capital Region.

In Uttarakhand, the temperature was recorded at 0.5 degree in Mussourie, minus 1.5 in Nainital, minus 0,1 degree in Haridwar, 1.2 degree in Pithoragarh,and 4 degree in Rishikesh.

The temperature in the state capital Dehradun, for the first time in the season touched 2.9 degrees Celsius.

Heavy snowfall was reported over the past one week in Badrinath, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Yamunotri, Rudraprayag, Tihri, Pauri and Chamoli.

Owing to the snowfall, eleven roads including the Dharasu-Badkot and Gangotri highways have been closed for traffic.

Meanwhile, Mumbai too has been lashed by a cold wave with the minimum temperature going down to  11.9 degree Celsius on Thursday- the lowest this season.
