Kolkata, Jan 17 (IBNS): At least four protesters were allegedly shot by police during a skirmish between local villagers and security forces over installation of power grid at Bhangar in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Tuesday, local media reports said.

Sustaining bullet wounds, those villagers have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

Since Tuesday morning, protesting against the installation of a power plant, a large number of villagers have started demonstration at several locations in Bhangar assembly constituency area.

A large number of police force, including Rapid Action Force (RAF), were deployed to the area and when policemen tried to disperse protesters by restoring to lathicharge, they engaged in a clashe with villagers.

Several police vehicles were reportedly vandalized and threw to ponds, while few cops were injured in the clash.

However, after getting direction from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, state power department has announced to cancel the project in Bhangar.

Till the last update came in, all security personnel have fled from the village, while all entrances to the area have been cordoned off by locals.
