New Delhi, Jan 19 (IBNS): Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh on Thursday pledged his support towards Jallikattu and demanded that the sport must be allowed.

Singh also compared Jallikattu with Bull Fighting and said that the former is a better sport, where the animal isn't killed.

In a two-part tweet, he said, "I support the Traditional Jallikattu festival. It is much better than Bullfighting in Spain where the Bull is killed. It must be allowed."

"The breeding of Jallikattu Bulls must be encouraged and supported," he added.

Meanwhile, thousands of protesters on Thursday continued to demonstrate at the Marina Beach in Chennai, pressing for their demand to lift ban on banned bull-taming festival-Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

Two dozen colleges across Chennai have been closed down on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

He left for Delhi on Wednesday.

The AIADMK tweeted: "Honourable CM Thiru.O.Panneerselvam leaves to Delhi to meet PM Modi."

The party had earlier posted: "Honourable Chief Minister Thiru O.Pannerselvam to meet PM Modi tomorrow to urge ordinance on Jallikattu."

AIADMK has supported the demand to allow the festival to be organized in the state again.

Animal rights organisation People for Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA had earlier lobbied to ensure a ban on the Jallikattu festival.

The AIADMK tweeted quoting party supremo Sasikala Natarajan as saying, "Union Government should promulgate ordinance revoking ban on Jallikattu. We will adopt all legal measures to ban PETA."

The Supreme Court in May 2014 banned Jallikattu, traditionally held as part of the four-day Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu.

However, politicians of different parties pleaded with the Centre to amend the concerned law so that Jallikattu can be conducted while stars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Simbu have extended their support in favour of  the sport.
