Only out-of-the-box thinking will lead to future development, stated President
Speaking on the occasion, the President expressed happiness over the fact that presently 27 universities exist in West Bengal. Recollecting the memories of his student days, he stated that there were only two universities in the state in those days.
Thus much progress has been made in higher education, he remarked and also stressed on improvising the standard of education being imparted in these institutions. Further stating that he is a Visitor to 126 central universities, the President expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that although much physical infrastructure has been created for education in the country, not a single Nobel prize has been earned through research work in India after Sir C.V. Raman’s research work which was carried out in the University of Calcutta and earned him a Nobel Prize in 1931.
The President stressed upon the importance of research and innovation in higher education and said, only out-of-the-box thinking will lead to further development in the future. Hence, he urged to create an ambience that nurtures research and innovation right from the school level in the country.
Speaking of Hindu School, the President stated, this institution and Presidency College not only produced numerous successful students over the past 200 years, but also stands as a witness to the occurrence of Bengal Renaissance and all the luminaries of that period from this part of the country were somehow attached to either of these two educational institutions of immense importance. Remarking that the English colonial rulers had founded educational institutions and started imparting western education to just create clerks and lower level officials who could carry out administrative works, he further stated, the luminaries who passed out from Hindu School in that era had succeeded in changing the very system of society and education that created them for the better.
He urged those associated with this iconic school to realise the unfinished dreams of its past students by working to create better educational facilities.
The President released a special cover on the bicentennial year of Hindu School and was presented with a book on its glorious history of 200 years.
