Honour of votes above daughter's izzat : Sharad Yadav's controversial remark
According to reports, he made the comment while dwelling on the importance of honesty in voting at an event in Patna on Tuesday.
"People need to be educated about the ballot paper. The integrity of a vote is bigger than the integrity of a daughter. If a daughter loses honour, the village loses its honour. But if a vote is sold, the nation will lose its honour," he said.
Yadav, a Lok Sabha member for many years, warned against voters being lured by parties with bribes and freebies.
Yadav had made controversial statements also in the past.
In 2015, during a discussion on the insurance bill in Parliament his remark on "saanvli (dusky)" South Indian women caused many to raise their eyebrows. He uttered the words while speaking on the Indian obsession for people with fair skin.
Angry lawmakers slammed Mr Yadav and called him "sexist" and a misogynist.
