Jallikattu faces new challenge in Supreme Court
According to reports, the Supreme Court agreed to hear on Monday the pleas of Animal Welfare Board of India and other animal rights organisations challenging the new law passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly to allow Jallikattu in the state.
The pleas were mentioned for urgent listing before the bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra.
Amid a growing mass agitation that made 'Tamil culture' its plank for the return of Jallikattu, the state passed a new law two days ago circumventing a Supreme Court ban to allow the sport which is performed during the 4-day harvest festival of Pongal.
On the basis of petitions filed by animal rights activists, the apex court had declared a ban on the sport in 2014 by the Supreme Court on the ground that it causes torture of bulls.
