BJP planning to impose Uniform Civil Code in India: JD-U
“We fear the BJP could impose Uniform Civil Code in the country. We urge all secular parties to oppose such move,” party’s general secretary KC Tyagi told the media on Wednesday.
He said the JD-U was of the view that any decision in this regard should be taken only after proper consultation with all political parties and religious groups.
Earlier this month, the state government had stated that the prevailing situation in the country is not fit for the implementation of UCC.
It also warned the implementation of UCC, without seeking a consensus, could create a situation of “social discord” and lead to “erosion of faith” of the minority class people in the Constitution.
“We must not forget that ours is a nation based on a delicate balance in respect of laws and governing principles for different religions and ethnic groups. In any case, imposition of UCC without forming consensus among the various religious groups, especially the minorities, will create a situation of social discord and lead to erosion of faith in the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion,” the state government warned in its letter to Law Commission chairperson BS Chauhan.
The letter was sent on January 12.
