Ten soldiers killed in Kashmir avalanches

Srinagar, Jan 26 (IBNS) : At least ten soldiers, including a Major, and four civilians-all belonging to a family-have been killed in avalanches along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir since Wednesday, reports said.

An avalanche struck an Army post in Gurez sector in Bandipore district on Wednesday killing six soldiers, whose bodies were recovered on Thursday morning.

A JCO and six soldiers have been rescued.

Earlier in another avalanche, three soldiers were reportedly killed  in the same sector.

An Army officer, Major Amit Sagar, was killed following an avalanche near a camp in Sonamarg area in Ganderbal district on Wednesday.

After another avalanche at the same area yesterday, an army patrol moving towards the camp went missing.

Search operations are still on though hampered by bad weather and heavy snowfall.

authorities have warned of more avalanches in Kupwara, Uri, Baramulla, Lolab, Gurez, Macchil areas of the Valley.

Reports said the  toll may rise further.

In another incident, four of a family died after their house was buried under the snow in Bandipora district.
