US a nation of immigrants and we should be proud of it : Mark Zuckerberg's FB barb against Trump

New Delhi, Jan 28 (IBNS) : Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday strongly criticised US President Donald Trump on his social network site for the new anti-immigration and refugee policies, saying America is a nation of immigrant and one should be proud of it.

"We need to keep this country safe, but we should do that by focusing on people who actually post a threat," Zuckerberg wrote.

"Expanding the focus of law enforcement beyond people who are real threats would make all Americans less safe by diverting resources, while millions of undocumented folks who don't pose a threat will live in fear of deportation," he said.

He  posted the message shortly after Trump signed an executive order to establish "new vetting measures" and keep "radical Islamic terrorists" out of the US.

In seven days after taking over, Trump has signed executive orders for the Mexico border wall, denying federal funding from sanctuary cities and barring refugees from nations like Iran, Iraq, Libya and Syria.

To which Zuckerberg reacted : "Like many of you, I'm concerned about the impact of the recent executive orders signed by President Trump."

The Facebook CEO, whose great- grandparents  had come from Germany, Australia and Poland and wife's Priscilla's parents were refugees from China and Vietnam, said the US is a "nation of immigrants".

"My great grandparents came from Germany, Austria and Poland. Priscilla's parents were refugees from China and Vietnam. The United States is a nation of immigrants, and we should be proud of that."

"Had we turned away refugees a few decades ago, Priscilla's family wouldn't be here today," Zuckerberg said.

He said the US stands to benefit when the "best and brightest from around the world can live, work and contribute here."

"I hope we find the courage and compassion to bring people together and make this world a better place for everyone."

"We should also keep our doors open to refugees and those who need help. That's who we are. Had we turned away refugees a few decades ago, Priscilla's family wouldn't be here today," Zuckerberg said.
