West Bengal: TMC leader arrested for vandalizing police station in Burdwan
Earlier in the afternoon, alleging that police were helping in an illegal and unauthorized construction in a local school compound and demanding the removal of local police station's Inspector-in-Charge (IC), a large number of local villagers attacked Ausgram Police Station.
They allegedly vandalized police station and adjoining police barrack, pelted stones aiming at policemen and beat them, set a temporary camp on fire and ransacked police vehicles and motorcycles, parked there.
At least six policemen, including two civic volunteers, were seriously injured in the sudden attack.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Dipak Kumar Pal, who was a duty officer at the police station during the rampage, burst into tears while describing the incident to the TV news reporters, according to local media reports.
A heavy police force along with Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Combat Force, led by Burdwan SP Kunal Agarwal, went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later, police arrested local TMC leader-councilor and former chairman of Guskara Municipality- Chanchal Garai- and ten others, involved in the attack.
"We have booked 11 persons so far in connection with the case and will arrest others, involved in the attack, soon," Burdwan SP Kunal Agarwal told IBNS.
Earlier, a local TMC leader claimed that CPI-M led the violence, which allegation was denied by CPI-M leaders.
However, the arrested persons will be produced to a local court on Sunday, officials said.
