Advocate gang beat a Foreigners Tribunal member in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 16 (IBNS): Police on Thursday arrested four advocates, who allegedly beat a Foreigners Tribunal member in Assam's Goalpara district.

According to the reports, Ajay Kumar Phukan, the Foreigners Tribunal member was beaten up by a gang of advocate following he gave an opinion that eight of the advocates clients were foreigners.

The Tribunal member of Goalpara on Feb 9 gave his opinion that 13 'D' (doubtful) voters presented in his court were foreigners.

Following the verdict, advocates of the eight persons on Wednesday were involved arguments with Phukan in his court premises and later beat him up.

Goalpara police said that, the advocates also broke furniture in the court.

The gang had managed to flee from the court peer before security personnel reached.

Following the incident, police on Thursday arrested four advocates and launched operation to nab the other attackers.

Phukan had filed an FIR following the incident.

Meanwhile, Assam police Director General Mukesh Sahay, Special DG Kula Saikia, Gauhati High Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and other top officials visited the lower Assam district.
