Kolkata, Mar 30 (IBNS): A video, showing a civic volunteer beating a man brutally with his helmet for allegedly violating traffic signal in West Bengal's Durgapur city, has gone viral on social networking site Facebook.

A Facebook page, Durgapur City, posted the video on Wednesday evening and just after 22 hours of its social media appearance, more than 77 thousand people have already watched this, while over 3,400 users have shared the 1 minute 19 seconds long clip so far.

According to the video and the Facebook page, the incident took place on Durgapur Expressway (NH 2) at Muchipara area in Durgapur city.

It was seen in the video that a civic volunteer, who is appointed to assist police officials in maintaining law and order or traffic, sloshed a man with his helmet for several times, kicked him and also slapped his face as the person allegedly violated a traffic signal and tried to escape after hitting the accused civic volunteer.

The video has captured that another civic volunteer and a traffic sergeant of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate were present at the scene during the incident.

Following the video went viral, local police officials have started preliminary probe into the matter, reports said.

"We are looking into the matter and these two civic volunteers and the traffic cop, who were seen in the video, have been identified," a senior official of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate told IBNS.

"We have to confirm first that in which situation the incident occurred and then appropriate action will be taken," the official added.
