Kolkata, Apr 20 (IBNS): A major fire broke out at a thermocol factory in Alampur area under Sankrail Police Station limits in West Bengal's Howrah district, nearly 21 km. from Kolkata, on Thursday, triggering scare among the locals, reports said.

According to reports, the fire was first noticed around 11 am. at the factory, located very close to Andul Road and Kolkata-Mumbai highway (NH-6).

As many as 23 fire tender engines and police force rushed to the spot and firemen fought for hours to douse the massive blaze.

Fire department has begun probe into the matter to know the exact reason behind the fire.

"After primary investigation, we are suspecting that the fire started due to a short circuit and spread very fast as several inflammable goods were placed inside the factory," a senior official of state fire and emergency services told IBNS.

A local police official said that vehicular traffic was controlled on NH-6 and Andul Road nearby during the hour-long firefighting operation.
