New Delhi, Apr 24 (IBNS): Hours after Maoists attacked Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans in Sukuma district of Chhattisgarh leaving at least 26 personnel killed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called the incident a coward act.

In a tweet, Modi said: "Attack on personnel in Chhattisgarh is cowardly and deplorable. We are monitoring the situation closely."

The encounter took place at Sukma district around 12:30 PM, where many CRPF jawans were assisting the road building activities.

"We are proud of the valour of our personnel. The sacrifice of the martyrs will not go in vain. Condolences to their families," Modi said in a follow up tweet.

According to the version of an injured jawan, around 300 naxals attacked them.

Expressing his grief for the incident, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said: "Maoists indulging in mindless killing. My deep condolences to the bereaved families. RIP..."

Apart from the PM of India and the union minister, Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, tweeted saying: "Saddened at the tragic death of CRPF jawans in Sukma, Chhattisgarh. Strongly condemn violence. My sympathies with the bereaved families."

The rescue team is still present at the spot where the encounter occurred.
