West Bengal government makes Bengali mandatory in all schools of the state
In a late evening press conference on Monday, the Education minister of the state Partha Chatterjee said: "From now in, it will be compulsory for students to learn Bengali in schools. English medium schools will have to make Bengali an optional subject from Class I so that the students can study it either as a second or third language."
Bengali has to be a subject in any of the three languages opted by students while Urdu, Gurumukhi, Nepali and Ol-chiki may be taken up by students as other languages of the medium of instructions.
The announcement made by the Education minister clearly stated that the English medium schools must make provisions to teach Bengali as a second or third language.
