Kolkata, June 20 (IBNS): In the context of World Blood Donors' Day, Narayana Health Network, Howrah in association with Howrah Police launched 'Srijan' - the blood donors’ directory along with a blood donation camp at Panchla in Howrah.

Srijan aims to ease out the difficulty in accessing blood supplies in times of need.

Present on the occasion, Sumit Kumar IPS, Superintendent of Police, Howrah Rural District mentioned that: “As part of police-community initiatives, we aim to create a bridge to better connect with common people in case of any blood urgencies. Shortages of blood also lead to a black market dealing with illegal blood buying and selling. Our endeavor is to stop that practice and start a reliable source of voluntary blood donors that people can access to when they have requirement for blood with help of the police department. Large number of police personnel have already enrolled themselves in this directory. We urge public to enroll here & also make best use of the facility.”

As there has been no central agency for blood collection, the process of blood collection is generally on local bodies obligated to organize blood donation camps in association with blood banks. This method leaves a gap between demand and supply.

Hence the concept of a blood donors’ registry called Srijan was initiated by Howrah Traffic Police and supported by Narayana Health Network of hospitals in Howrah. Srijan is a blood donor’s directory where donors willing to donate blood can register themselves to maintain record of blood donors across the region. The records would be confidential and accessible to the Howrah Police.

About the initiative R Venkatesh, Zonal Director East, Narayana Health said, “Srijan is a great initiative by the Howrah Rural District Police and we are grateful to them for trusting our services and partnering with us in this noble cause. This will encourage more people to come forward to donate blood.”
