According to reports, supporters of two local TMC groups engaged in a skirmish with each other over a local dispute at Nebukhali village under Basanti Police Station limits in South 24 Parganas district in the morning.
Several crude bombs were hurled and bullets were fired during the hour-long clash, while few houses, shops and motorcycles were vandalized and few of those were set on fire.
When police went to the area, crude bombs were thrown aiming at them.
Later, a heavy police force along with Rapid Action Force (RAF) rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
At least ten villagers were seriously injured in the clash and were taken to local hospitals and health centres.
A local police official told IBNS that five persons, including the chief of TMC ruled local village panchayat- Aftab Mollah, have been arrested so far in connection with the violence.
"We have recovered several live bombs and spent bullet shells from the area," the official said. "A heavy police force have been posted there at the village to avoid further untoward incident while our search operation is currently underway to nab others involved in the clash."
However, so far there has been no reaction from the leaders of TMC.
