Kolkata, July 07 (IBNS): Delegations of the BJP, Congress and Left parties were prevented from entering communal violence-hit Basirhat on Friday, triggering criticisms from opposition leaders.

According to reports, a BJP delegation led by Roopa Ganguly was stopped near the Kolkata airport as they attempted to visit the area in North 24 Parganas district while leaders of the Congress and Left Front too were asked by police to go back when they tried to visit the area to assess the situation.

The Congress delegation led by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was stopped at Barasat, while  BJP MP Roopa Ganguly was stopped at Michael Nagar.

CPI (M)  MP Mohammed Salim was stopped  much ahead of Baduria, the violence-hit area now being barricaded by security forces.

"The CM should have appealed to people on first day and give out a strong message to the people rather than engaging in a fight with the Governor," CPI (M)  MP Mohammed Salim told media.

Meanwhile, reacting over the communal violence incident in the state, Union Minister Babul Supriyo has said being a Hindu has become a crime in West Bengal.

"Being a Hindu in West Bengal is a crime," the singer-turned-politician was quoted as saying by Republic TV.

He was quoted as saying by the news channel as saying: "You cannot be a part of a majority, as the minority are the people who keep Mamata Banerjee in power. She has been playing with fire for a very long time."

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif meanwhile opposed the communal violence situation in Basirhat area as he said damaging property worth crores are against the teachings of  Prophet Mohammad.

He said  Prophet Mohammad is too great to be defended against a Facebook post.

"Prophet Sahab is too great to b defended against a FB post.Damaging property worth crores&violence is absolutely against his teachings.Shame," Kaif tweeted.

Violence broke out in Basirhat last week over an apparent Facebook post. Though the situation was brought under control it again turned bad on Thursday after police caned an angry crowd that alleged that only the people from a particular community were being arrested.

Local Trinamool Congress MLA Dipendu Biswas had to face the ire of the people who had to leave the town under police protection.

The state government has suspended internet services in four police station areas of Basirhat, Baduria, Swarupnagar and Deganga to check the spread of rumours through social networking sites.
