Banerjee announced her government will conduct judicial inquiry into the incident.
"We will conduct a judicial enquiry on Basirhat incident. Action will be taken for spreading fake pics/videos against anyone found guilty. Law will take its course," the CM said.
She said: "I congratulate the people of Bengal for not getting trapped by those spreading rumours and communal hatred. Peace restored."
Highlighting the issue of recent Facebook post that might have triggered rumours, the Chief Minister said: "There is ‘Fakebook’ happening in the name of Facebook. I respect Facebook, not ‘Fakebook'."
She said Bengal is surrounded by several sensitive international borders and one should not tinker with that.
She also dwelt a lot on the Darjeeling situation and blamed the centre for not sending her central forces even after one month to deal with the situation there.
She said the recent violence was a design to disturb peace and she had banned two organisations- one Hindu group and another Muslim group- from holding any public programme.
