WB: 12-hour general strike underway in North Dinajpur after 1 killed in BJP-TMC clash

Kolkata, Jul 9 (IBNS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is observing a 12-hour shut down in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district on Sunday, a day after its activist was killed during an alleged clash with Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the same district.

According to local media reports, a large number of shops are closed there while very few vehicles are being spotted on the roads of North Dinajpur.

Strike supporters allegedly vandalized two state-run buses in Raiganj and ransacked at least three trucks on NH-34 on Sunday morning.

Earlier on Saturday evening, a local BJP activist, Bijay Singha, was shot dead and several other supporters of the party were seriously injured during a clash with state's ruling TMC at Kachakali Chandragachh area under Chopra Police Station limits in North Dinajpur.

Local BJP leaders claimed that TMC leader-activists suddenly attacked their rally and besides hurling several crude bombs, they fired few rounds of bullets indiscriminately, causing death of a 24-year-old saffron activist.

TMC leaders, however, denied all allegations against them.

Local police have started investigation into the incident while no arrest has been made till the last update came in.
