Presidential poll forces postponement of Nagaland floor test

Guwahati, July 12 : Nagaland governor P. B. Acharya who had asked Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu to prove his majority on the floor of the assembly on or before July 15, has postponed the floor test in view of the July 17 presidential election.

An official of Nagaland Raj Bhawan said  the floor test has been postponed till further notice by the Governor order.

On Tuesday, the Governor asked CM Liezietsu to prove his majority on the floor of the assembly after the power struggle within the ruling Naga People's Front rose to a new height.

Former Chief Minister TR Zeliang, who is now NPF President, wrote to the Governor, staking claim to form a Government with the  support of 41 legislators, including 34 NPF  MLAs (including him) and seven Independent legislators.

At an NPF  meeting held on July four at Zeiling's residence at Dimapur, 34 NPF MLAs (including him) out of 47, supported him to continue as the leader of the legislature party and also authorized him to stake claim before the Governor to form a new NPF- led DAN Government in Nagaland, the letter claimed.

“The MLAs also urged the present Chief Minister, who is a non-MLA, to resign and pave way for me to take over as the Chief Minister,” Zeliang said in the letter.

The Governor issued a notice to Zeliang to submit a writ petition to the assembly speaker Imtiwapang Aier with at least 10 opposition legislators to move a no confidence motion against the no- opposition Government.

According to reports, at least 34 legislators of the NPF are still  camping in a resort in Assam's Kaziranga National Park.
