Kolkata, Jul 29 (IBNS): A fire broke out at National Medical College and Hospital in south-east Kolkata's Beniapukur area on Saturday afternoon, triggering panic among patients and their family members, reports said.

According to reports, fire and heavy smoke was first noticed at around 12:05 pm. at the women's ward on fourth floor of the state government-run hospital building near Park Circus area.

As many as four fire tenders rushed to the spot. Local police and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel also rushed to the spot.

A fire and emergency service official said that the fire has been brought under control.

"There was a minor fire in the wiring which created heavy smoke," the official told IBNS. "Firemen doused the blaze very fast, but our operation to detect the exact source of the fire and to cool that off is still underway."

A local police official confirmed that no casualty has been reported so far.

"The situation was not out of control completely that time and there was no need to evacuate everyone from the entire building," the official told IBNS.

"Few patients were taken out of the hospital building by their family members. No casualty has been reported so far," the police official added.

However, a senior official of state fire and emergency services said that they will begin a probe into the reason of the blaze after\ firefighting operation ends.
