Former union minister Santosh Mohan Dev passes away

Guwahati, Augt 2 (IBNS) : Former union minister and veteran Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev died on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Silchar following a prolonged illness.

He was 83 and is survived by  wife Bithika Dev, a former legislator and four daughters including present Congress MP Sushmita Dev.

Family members said  he was ailing since long and was admitted at the hospital on July 26.

He breathed his last at around 6-06 am.

Once a  heavyweight Congress leader, Santosh Mohan Dev was the union minister for heavy industries and public enterprises in the first UPA government.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha  seven times since 1980- five times from Silchar constituency and twice from Tripura.

Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Congress leaders of Assam and several organisations have condoled the death of the veteran political leader.
