Patna, Aug (TheBiharPost/IBNS): The change of guards in Bihar seems to have sounded death knell for all illegal abattoirs running in the state.

In a significant development, the state government has announced to shut all the 150-odd slaughter houses running in the state which means Bihar will be left with only two legal slaughter houses located in Araia district, more than 300 km east of Patna.

The government launched crack down on them after three people were caught allegedly smuggling cow meat in a truck from an illegal slaughter houses running at Ranisagar village in Bhojpur district last week.

“At no cost, we will allow the slaughter of animals in the state. We have decided to review the process of granting licences to the slaughter houses,” animal husbandry minister Pashupati Kumar Paras told a Hindi daily today.

According to him, he has also sought a detailed report about all slaughter houses running in the state from the department secretary.

“I have asked the department secretary to furnish a report on all slaughterhouses in the state — licensed as well as illegal — within a week. Based on the report and the norms governing the same, we would close down all illegal slaughterhouses,” Paras was quoted as saying in The Times of India.

As per the report, the maximum numbers of illegal slaughter houses are located in eastern region of the state.
