JU students protest against West Bengal government's plan of dissolving political unions

Kolkata, Aug 11 (IBNS): Students of Jadavpur University staged a protest in the campus against the recent plan of the West Bengal Government of doing away with the political unions.

The Mamata Banerjee Government has announced its  plan to dissolve the elected political unions in the colleges or universities to stop campus politics.

It  issued a notification in June to replace the elected students' union with a nominated body.

Several students protested outside Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das' office calling the plan an "attack on campus democracy".

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in an interview with a news channel few months ago, had spoken in favour of the St Xavier's College's model of students' union which is devoid of any political colours.

The students of the JU also took to wall graffiti voicing their protest against the move. One of the messages reads :  "Xaviers' model in Jadavpur University? Not accepted."
