Current flood claims 229 animal lives including 15 rhinos in Kaziranga

Guwahati, Aug 19 (IBNS): The second wave of devastating flood has claimed at least 229 animals' lives including 15 one-horned rhinos in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park.

Over 22.11 lakh people of 16 districts of the state are still homeless in the current flood.

A top official of Kaziranga National Park said that, the flood water is starting to recede, but still 30 percent areas of the park have been inundated as on Saturday.

“It will take more few days to completely recede,” the park official said.

“At least 229 animals died in the current flood,” official said.

The dead animals including 15 one-horned rhinos, 189 hog deer, 4 elephants, 11 sambar, 4 wild boar, 1 tiger, 2 swamp deer, 2 buffalo.

The park official said that, as on Saturday, the forest officials, CWRC team and local people have rescued 50 animals including 6 rhinos and 41 animals.

“Still 6 rhinos and one swamp deer are under treatment at CWRC center at Kaziranga,” the official said.

The first wave of devastating flood claimed 105 animals including 9 rhinos in the world heritage site last month and 503 animals died in last year flood.

In 2012, at least 793 animals died in Kaziranga National Park due to heavy floods.
