New Delhi, Aug 25 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called the violence in Panchkula following the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by a special CBI court in connection with a rape case as 'deeply distressing'.

"The instances of violence today are deeply distressing. I strongly condemn the violence & urge everyone to maintain peace," Modi tweeted.

Modi said he is monitoring the law and order situation in the state.

"The law & order situation is being closely monitored. I reviewed the situation with the NSA & Home Secretary," he said.

The Prime Minister said: "Urged officials to work round the clock to restore normalcy and provide all possible assistance that is required."

At least 28 people were killed as violence hit Panchkula city in Haryana on Friday following the conviction of Dera Sacha chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by a CBI court for the rape of two women.

The violence has left several others injured.

After the conviction of the self-styled spiritual leader, his followers went on a rampage as they attacked police, journalists and even destroyed vehicles.

Several OB vans were also damaged by the attackers.
