Gautam Gambhir slams Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
It was after his conviction on Friday at a court in Haryana's Panchkula that violence broke out in the city with the Dera chief's followers attacking police, journalists and even damaging vehicles and public properties, disrupting normal life completely.
The violence left 36 people dead and several others injured.
Violence was also reported from Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab.
Meanwhile, Gambhir not only attacked the spiritual leader, he also highlighted numerous other issues concerning national security, safety for women and the matter of playing the national anthem in cinema halls.
Gambhir tweeted: "Wonder what Ram & Rahim are thinking about the 'Insaan' & his misdeeds today! A classic case of religion marketing! #PanchkulaViolence."
"Border per terrorist, andar Baba rapist aur hum uljhey hain cinema hall mein national anthem bajaney k liyey, time 2 act #pulwamaattack," he said.
The special CBI judge, on Monday, announced a 10-year-jail term for Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
He was convicted for raping two Sadhvis (female followers).
The prosecution demanded maximum punishment for the rape convict while the Dera chief's defence argued that Ram Rahim is a social worker and urged the judge to take a lenient view.
The CBI urged the judge to treat the case as 'rarest of rare' during its argument.
Reports said that the Dera chief broke down in court and pleaded for leniency while the judge was reading out the sentence.
According to Times Now, victims shouted slogans of 'jail him (Ram Rahim) for life' inside the court premises.
Meanwhile, keeping the importance of the situation in mind, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh called for an emergency meeting.
ANI news agency reported incidences of violence in Sirsa, the headquarters of the sect.
At least two cars were torched by Dera supporters.
Ram Rahim was convicted by the CBI court on Friday in a rape case that dates back to 2002.
