Kolkata, Sep 15 (IBNS): Ritabrata Banerjee, the controversial Rajya Sabha MP of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), has been expelled from the party's primary membership for his alleged 'serious anti-party activities', a press statement said on Friday.

General Secretary of CPI-M's West Bengal unit, Surya Kanta Mishra, said in the media release, "Ritabrata Banerjee stands expelled under section 19 (13) of party constitution."

"During party's state committee's meeting on Wednesday (Sep 13), it was decided to expel Ritabrata Banerjee and the decision has been approved by CPI-M's Politburo," the statement further read.

Months ago, the young parliamentarian was accused of living a luxurious life and he had been suspended from his party for three months since last June.

On Monday, Ritabrata slammed his party and a few of its leaders during a live interview in a private TV channel, which led to his expulsion from the CPI-M.

"On Sep 11, Ritabrata Banerjee tried to humiliate his party publicly during a TV interview and basing on it, CPI-M state committee decided to expel him from the party," the press statement said.

Reacting on the matter, Ritabrata Banerjee said, "I was with this party for last 21 years, from 1996 to 2017. My fight was not against the party, it was against a particular section of the party."

"Someone had to bell the cat, I did that. I'm not regretful for what I've done," Banerjee added.
