Demonetisation, GST led Indian economy to ICU: Rahul Gandhi

| @indiablooms | Oct 26, 2017, at 05:17 pm
New Delhi, Oct 26 (IBNS): Taking a dig at Union finance minister Arun Jaitley once again, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the two biggest steps taken by the Modi government recently, demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST), led the Indian economy to a critical condition.

Gandhi, who is extremely vocal against the central government on Twitter of late, said on the micro-blogging site, "डॉ जेटली, नोटबंदी और GST से अर्थव्यवस्था ICU में है। आप कहते हैं आप किसी से कम नहीं, मगर आपकी दवा में दम नहीं", which loosely translates to "Dr. Jaitley, economy is in ICU because of noteban and GST. You say you are no less, but your medicine cannot cure".

Few days back, Gandhi, while campaigning in Gujarat, termed the GST launched by the Modi government in 2017 as "Gabbar Singh Tax" alluding to a famous film 'Sholay'.

Gabbar was the name of the villain in Bollywood's blockbuster movie 'Sholay'.

Gandhi, while addressing the rally in Gujarat on Monday, had said the GST has badly hit  lakhs of small traders in the country.

"This GST is not GST. It is Gabbar Singh Tax," Gandhi said.

The Congress vice president even hit the Centre over its decision of banning old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes last year.

Ridiculing the GST implemented by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government for the second consecutive day, Gandhi tweeted on Tuesday: "Congress GST= Genuine Simple Tax Modi ji's GST= Gabbar Singh Tax =''ये कमाई मुझे दे दे."

Countering Gandhi's tweet, Jaitely said only those who were used to scams will have problems with legitimate tax.

"Those who were used to 2G scam and coal scam will have a lot of problems with legitimate tax" he said.

Demonetisation was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016, banning old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes while the BJP-led central government brought the biggest tax reform in the country, Goods and Services Tax, in April this year.
