Jharkhand: Myanmar Consul General in Kolkata dies in road mishap

Ranchi, Oct 27 (IBNS): Myanmar Consul General in Kolkata was killed and three others were seriously injured after their SUV crashed into a truck on NH-2 near Galijori More under Nimiyaghat Police Station limits in Dumri block in Giridih district of Jharkhand, 190 km from Ranchi, on Friday morning, officials said.

Pyi Soe (49) was going towards Kolkata when the mishap occurred at around 11 am, police said.

"The accident took place nearly 80 km away from Giridih town around 11 am. today. After losing its control, a Toyota Inova SUV (4CC 0101) skidded into the opposite lane of NH-2 and was hit by a track," Giridih SP Akhilesh B Veriar told IBNS.

"Three passengers and the driver of the car were seriously injured in the crash. After being rescued, they were rushed to Meena General Hospital in Dumri where one of them, who has been identified as Myanmar Consul General in Kolkata Pyi Soe (49), was declared dead. Three others, including Soe's wife Neo Aau and personal assistant Tetu Aau and car's driver Vipin Singh, have been referred to a Ranchi hospital. We have reports that the car was coming from Gaya and going towards Kolkata," he said.

Police have started investigating into the incident.

"We have started probe into the incident while both the car and truck have been seized," he added.

The Myanmar Consulate in Kolkata has not issued any official statement on the matter yet.

Soe was appointed as Myanmar Consul General in Kolkata in December last year.
