Tipu Sultan Jayanti : Prohibitory orders in Kodagu, elaborate security measures all over Karnataka
Bengaluru, Nov 10 (IBNS) : Prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr P C have been imposed in Karnataka's Kodagu and adequate security measures taken elsewhere across the state ahead of Tipu Jayanti celebration.
According to news reports, more than 150 BJP supporters, who were protesting against Tipu Jayanti celebrations, were also detained on Friday in Hubli.
The BJP has been opposing the Karnataka government's decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti in the state on November 10.
In protest against the celebrations, a shutdown in Kodagu Bandh has been called.
Reports said private transportation is off the road.
The Congress government views Tipu Sultan as a patriot, who fought against the British. However, the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) hold Tipu Sultan as a tyrant monarch, who was "biased" against Hindus.
Large-scale communal violence erupted during the Tipu Jayanti celebrations in 2015 when it was first organised by the state government.
Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore. He was considered an enemy of the British East India Company.
Tipu was killed in May 1799, while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against the British forces.
