New Delhi, Nov 20 (IBNS): Veteran Congress leader and former union minister, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who had been in a marathon coma for nine years, died on Monday, media reports said.

West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury confirmed the news to The Indian Express.

Dasmunsi was a key Congress leader, who held various ministerial posts, including that of Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting.

Dasmunsi suffered a massive stroke in 2008 which left him paralysed and unable to speak.

His body systems were functional but he breathed through a tracheostomy tube attached to his neck and was fed through a PEG tube in his stomach.

He is survived by his wife Deepa Dasmunsi and son Priyadeep Dasmunsi.

Rising from the rank of a Youth Congress worker, Dasmunsi went to become the YC All India President and a key player in West Bengal politics in the 1970s, who also became the WBPCC President.

In his foray into the national politics, Dasmunsi became one of the close aides of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
