BJP scripts massive victory in Uttar Pradesh civic polls

Lucknow, Dec 1 (IBNS): Giving moments of celebration for the BJP ahead of the Gujarat polls, the ruling party clinched 14 mayoral seats in the Uttar Pradesh civic polls.

The Bahujan Samaj Party won two seats.

The mayoral candidate of the BJP won seats in Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Agra, Firozabad, Ayodhya, Mathura, Lucknow, Kanpur, Saharanpur Jhansi and Bareilly, and Moradabad.

The BSP, however, won the Aligarh and Meerut seats.

The civic polls in the state were held in three phases.

This was a major test for the UP Chief Minister  Yogi Adityanath and his government in the past few months.

Yogi Adityanath had posted a massive victory in the state Assembly polls last year to form the government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to congratulate the partymen and worker for victory in the polls.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted:  "Congratulations to people of Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister @myogiadityanath ji, & BJP Karyakartas @BJP4UP on an emphatic victory and clean sweep by the BJP in the #UPCivicPolls2017 The resounding BJP victory is reiteration of our commitment for honest, clean & peoples' governance."

The win in the civic poll will be considered to be extremely important for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who assumed the portfolio in March this year, as the election is the first biggest assignment as the CM.

While Adityanath was seen to hold a large of rallies, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati were missed in the campaigns of their respective parties.

In 2012, the BJP bagged 10 out of 12 mayoral seats in the state.

In 2017 state poll, the BJP had crushed Akhilesh's dream to become the CM for the second time by winning 325 out of 403 seats.
