Kolkata Police allegedly attack protesting guardians at MP Birla school
Kolkata, Dec 4 (IBNS): The Kolkata Police on Monday evening restored to lathicharge to disperse a large gathering of guardians, who have been protesting since morning in front of MP Birla school at Behala area , over alleged sexual assault of a 3-year-old girl student.
Family members of the nursery student alleged that their child was sexually abused by a school staffer inside the school in September and neither the school authority nor local police had taken any action against the accused in last two and half months.
Protesting the incident and demanding strict steps against the accused and the school, a large number of guardians gathered in front of MP Birla school on Monday and held a peaceful demonstration programme.
Due to the protests, traffic on James Long Sarani was disrupted for hours.
Amidst massive protest, principal of the school, who firstly denied all allegations, announced to suspended the accused employee, Manoj Singh, pending enquiry.
Later in evening, when MP Birla school's teachers and staffers were being evacuated by a school bus, protesting guardians tried to stop them and police restored to lathicharge.
"We had been protesting peacefully since morning and the school authority did not arrange any meeting with us," a protesting guardian told IBNS.
"In evening, police tried to evacuate school staffers safely by a school bus and when we tried to stop the bus, police suddenly attacked us without any provocation from our side," the guardian said.
"Police beat us with sticks and helmets and detained few protesters as well. Very few women cops were present here that time and male cops lathicharged and pushed protesting ladies," he added.
However, agitating parents said that their movement will be strengthened from Tuesday morning while no reaction on the lathicharge has been received from the city police officials so far.
