Special courts for fast-track trial of criminal cases against MPs, MLAs

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IBNS): The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it has decided to set up a dozen special courts for a year to fast-track the trial of criminal cases against politicians, including MPs and MLAs.

According to reports, 1581 cases against politicians are pending.

These cases were declared by the politicians ahead of the 2014 elections when they filed their nomination papers.

This comes as the apex court is hearing a petition by advocate Ashwini Upadhyaya, who has sought a life ban on convicted politicians from contesting elections.

The government has, however, opposed the proposal for life ban.
