Mumbai Kamala Mills Fire: Five BMC officials suspended, case registered against restaurant owner
Mumbai, Dec 29 (IBNS): Five officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been suspended following the Kamala Mills fire in Mumbai's Lower Parel area, according to media reports on Friday.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that BMC Commissioner has been asked to investigate the Kamala Mills Fire case.
A case has also been registered against the owners of the restaurant 1 Above where the fire broke out.
The fire, which broke out late on Thursday night, left at last 14 people dead and an almost equal number injured.
According to reports, the fire first broke out at the 1 Above restaurant at midnight and spread to other eateries; it then spread to the next building that housed the offices of Times Network.
It took more than three hours to bring the blaze under control and the fire brigade found that illegal constructions exacerbated the fire, according to reports.
On Friday, the BMC has started checking out the eateries in the mill areas for irregularities and flouting of fire safety norms.
Incidentally, on Dec 19, a fire at an illegal 'farsan' shop in Mumbai's Saki Naka area had resulted in the death of 12 people.
