Triple Talaq Bill pushed to Budget session of Parliament, RS adjourned sine die

New Delhi, Jan 5 (IBNS): The Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage Bill 2017, popularly known as the Triple Talaq Bill, is likely to be taken up in the Budget session of Parliament as the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday, the last day of the winter Parliament session, according to media reports.

The triple talaq bill was listed in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Both the BJP and the Congress had, earlier in the day, issued a whip asking all its MPs to be present in the house on Friday, media reported.

Although the central government successfully passed the bill in Lok Sabha, it failed to receive consensus in the Upper House. BJP failed to get the support of its allies and opposition parties for the passage of the bill.

Opposition parties such as Congress, Trinamool, though not opposing the bill, demanded the central government to send it to the Select Committee for review. The Opposition claimed the bill was not error proof.

Jaitley termed Congress' demand to refer the bill to the select committee as invalid.

Citing Rule 70 (sub-rule 2a), Congress MP Anand Sharma tried to justify the Opposition's demand to refer the bill to the select committee.

Blaming Congress for not following parliamentary procedures, Jaitley said the whole country "is watching that in the other House you supported the Bill and here you are trying to derail it."

"Now, we are taken by surprise that we all assemble here after 3 PM, a motion is suddenly submitted to us. For the first time breaking all parliamentary convention and procedures, an invalid motion is moved," he added.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her party supports the bill but it is full of errors which will put Muslim wives in trouble. Trinamool MP Derek O' Brien too reiterated his chief's arguments in the Rajya Sabha.

The upper house was adjourned multiple times during the week over the bill that was briefly discussed in the house, reports said.

The Budget Session of Parliament will start from January 29 and.the General Budget 2018 will be presented on February 1.
