West Bengal youth held for proposing Sachin Tendulkar's daughter over phone
Kolkata, Jan 7 (IBNS): A team of Mumbai Police on Saturday night arrested a man from West Bengal's East Medinipur district for allegedly proposing and harassing former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's only daughter Sara Tendulkar over phone, officials said.
According to reports, based on a complaint filed by Tendulkar family at Bandra Police Station, Mumbai Police's crime branch made the arrest.
"A team of Mumbai Police sought West Bengal Police's assistance to nab a person who had been allegedly stalking and harassing Sachin Tendulkar's daughter," a local police official told IBNS.
"Taking help of local police, the team of Mumbai Police's crime and investigation branch booked the accused, Debkumar Maity, from Andulia village under Mahishadal Police Station limits in East Medinipur district of West Bengal on Saturday night," the official said.
"Debkumar Maity, who is popular in his locality as a painter, allegedly proposed Tendulkar's daughter over phone several times and we found that he has tattooed the name of Sachin's daughter on several parts of his body," the police officer added.
A senior official of Mumbai Police told IBNS, "Days ago, Tendulkar family lodged a complaint at Bandra Police Station alleging that Sachin Tendulkar's office received anonymous phone calls more than 20 times where the caller had been continuously proposing Sachin's daughter for marriage."
"After starting probe into the matter, we traced the anonymous caller's mobile number and identified the person. Finally, taking assistance from local police, our officers arrested the accused caller from West Bengal on Saturday," the official added.
However, the man is likely to be produced before a local court at Haldia on Sunday while his family members are claiming that he is mentally unstable.
"We will appeal to the court for a transit remand that we can take Debkumar Maity to Mumbai for further investigation," a Mumbai Police official told IBNS.
