PIL in Calcutta HC against CU's decision to award Mamata Banerjee with D.Litt
Kolkata, Jan 8 (IBNS): Challenging Calcutta University (CU)'s announcement to confer West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with its prestigious D.Litt (Doctor of Letters) degree, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in Calcutta High Court, reports said.
According to reports, two individuals, Abu Taleb and Ranjugopal Mukherjee, filed the petition on Monday before the bench of Calcutta HC's acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya.
The court, however, has accepted the PIL and it's likely to be heard on Jan 10, a day before the state-funded university is scheduled to confer its honourary D.Litt degree to Mamata Banerjee.
Earlier on Oct 25 last year, following a meeting of university's Senate-Syndicate, CU's Vice-Chancellor (VC), Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, announced to award Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with honourary D.Litt degree for her contribution towards Arts, Literature and Social Services on Jan 11, during the prestigious institute's convocation in south Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha.
Mamata Banerjee, however, agreed to accept the honorary degree and to present dialect speech on that day.
Mamata Banerjee is the first Chief Minister of West Bengal to be honoured with D.Litt degree by Calcutta University during governance.
